More Safety Tips

While hunting, it is incredibly important that you follow certain safety precautions. These safety tips can be the difference between injury and continued health - or the difference between life and death. Keep these ideas in mind while you hunt or practice at the range, and make sure that you periodically review your hunting tips to stay safe.

Protecting Your Eyes & Ears

While shooting, you'll want to make sure to keep your eyes and ears protected. Wear hearing and eye protection. Firearms are incredibly loud, and they can create noises that will damage your ears. Similarly, escaping gases, burnt powder and other debris can enter and damage your eyes.

Keep Yourself Lucid

Certainly, any time that you are going to use a firearm, you need to be 100% aware of what you are doing. This means that you can never use a firearm while drunk or taking drugs. Alcohol and drugs impair your normal ability to think clearly and to function well. This can be incredibly dangerous when handling a weapon. Similarly, such substances impair your ability to keep your emotions in check. If you get overemotional with a firearm, it can cause you lose control or to fail to follow safety tips.

Don't Trust Your Gun

Never rely on your gun's safety. Always assume that the gun is loaded - and always assume that it is dangerous. When you carry a gun it isn't a laughing matter and it isn't a casual item. You need to take every precaution when the gun is in your possession and realize how dangerous an object you are carrying.

Show Your Caution with Your Clothes

When you hunt, always wear the right clothing. This means that you need at least 400 square inches of hunting orange above the waist-line during deer season and during other hunting expeditions. Wear a bright orange hat as well. These items should be worn at all times, and shouldn't be taken off just because you are hot or you're taking a ten minute break.

Know Your Weapon's Range

Before taking a weapon out, you should know it as well as you know your girlfriend or spouse (maybe even better)! Know your weapon's range and shoot within that range. Be absolutely sure of your target and what is behind it at all times.

Tell Others of Your Whereabouts

When you go hunting, always make sure that someone who isn't with you knows where you are. They should know where you plan to be, and when you plan to return. If you move to another location, let them know this as well. While this may sound overly caution, it is very important for someone to know how to get in touch with you, should they need to.

Bring the Right Extra Equipment

Make sure that you dress appropriately for the weather and have the right accessories. Have a compass and map with you so that you won't get lost and stay alert of your environment. This will help you to avoid poisonous snakes and other items. Carry a flashlight with you if you intend to be out before or after daylight hours.

These hunting safety tips, and many others, can make a huge difference in your comfort and safety while enjoying this great sport. Make sure that you are safe at all times, and have fun on the hunt!
