Sturm, Ruger and Co, Inc

For almost sixty years, Sturm, Ruger and Co, Inc. has been leading the way in supplying high quality firearms for both recreational use and law enforcement purposes. Their motto is "Arms Makers for Responsible Citizens" and they pride themselves on their firearms and their investment castings.

Ruger's History

Sturm, Ruger and Co first opened for business in 1949. Its founder, William B. Ruger, wanted to make sure that each and every product was up to the highest standard, so that he would want one of these products no matter who had made it. Ruger had a fascination with guns and began designing his own guns and visiting machine shops at an early age. During World War II, he worked as a production engineer at the Springfield Armory and Auto Ordinance Corporation.

Sturm, Ruger and Co, Inc Begins

In 1946, he rented space in a small barn in Southport, Connecticut and started Ruger Corporation. He soon obtained financial support and help from Alexander Sturm, a man who understood Ruger's vision and wanted to make it into a reality. Sturm was a writer and artist who graduated from Yale Art School and designed the company's trademark. Although they seemed like an unlikely match, Sturm and Ruger joined forces and started the Sturm, Ruger and Co business and started selling Ruger's creations.

The Company Today

In 1990, Sturm, Ruger and Co, Inc began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. They are the only firearms company that has their line made entirely in the United States. They have over 2000 employees and they make hundreds of thousands of firearms each year that are used for hunting, target shooting, self-defense and more. Law enforcement personnel and government agencies also choose their products for their high-quality and dependability. They have continued to make a profit every year and have had their success written about in many magazines including Forbes, Business Week, and more.

As the company looks to the future, they continue to believe in their product and in their longevity. They produce four or five new designs each year and have even branched out into such things as making cast titanium gold club heads! Their corporate headquarters are still in Southport and the little red barn where it all started still stands to this day.
