The Oldest of Its Kind
A Company Long on Status
First established as E. Remington and Sons by Eliphalet Remington, the Remington Arms Company is the oldest company in the US which still makes its original product, and holds the status of being the oldest continuously operating manufacturer in North America. It is also the only American company to produce both firearms and ammunition domestically, and it is the largest producer of shotguns and rifles. Adding to this, Remington has also developed or adopted more cartridges than any other gun maker or ammunition manufacturer in the world. Remington has a wider distribution base than any of its competitors, distributing its products to over 60 countries. Pretty impressive, don't you think?
I Can Build A Better One
Remington's long history began back in 1816 when Eliphalet Remington's son, Eliphalet 11, a blacksmith, was convinced he could make a better gun than he could buy, and began producing rifle barrels to complete the handmade rifles people constructed themselves to save money. Eliphalet 11 was sent by his father to learn barrel-making techniques and when he returned home a successful barrel making operation was added to the family's business.
And The Business Begins...
It seems that Eliphalet 11 built himself a flintlock rifle - a very advanced piece of work for those days - and entered a shooting contest where he ended up placing second. The real winner at the show that day was his rifle, which garnered great attention and ultimately plenty of orders. This was the initial impetus for production and in 1829 the operation was moved to New York where the Remington barrel and gunsmithing business took off. They remained true to this focus until 1845 when the demand from buyers in the sporting community urged them forward into producing other rifle parts. They began to manufacture percussion locks, trigger guards, butt plates and other firearm components.
The Military Factor
Military contracts were plentiful for the Remington Arms Company and they supplied firearms to the US army and developed the M1917 Enfield Rifle for their use. Allied powers in the First World War used the M1916 Berthier rifles in France, the Pattern 1914 Enfield in Britain and the Model 1891 Mosin-Nagant rifles in Imperial Russia. Today, the Remington Military Products Division not only supplies the US Military but it also supplies a massive number of law enforcement agencies.
Today's Focus
Remington's well established foothold in the industry assures it of its place. The name dominates sport shooting circles with many of its more than 100 models of rifles and shotguns found at various events. At the present time, the Company has chosen to focus its energy entirely on the production of shotguns, rifles and ammunition and are only producing one handgun at this time.
